the latest casualty and Russell Copeland is the newest member of the Green Bay Packers patchwork receiving corps.
Schroeder was placed on injured reserve Wednesday after suffering a broken collarbone in Monday night’s 24-22 loss at Tampa Bay. He joins an injury list that includes receivers Antonio Freeman, Robert Brooks and Corey Bradford.
Freeman is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears with a broken jaw, while Brooks is doubtful with a hamstring injury. Both missed Monday night’s contest. Bradford suffered a torn hamstring against the Buccaneers and will not play Sunday.
Receiver Derrick Mayes also missed six games from October 15th to November 22nd with a knee injury.
The Packers signed Copeland, who was released by the Philadelphia Eagles last week. The 6-foot, 200-pound receiver has 101 catches for 1,449 yards in a six-year NFL career. Originally selected by Buffalo in the fourth round of the 1993 draft, he spent four seasons with the Bills before joining Philadelphia as a free agent in 1997.
Copeland had 18 receptions for 221 yards before the Eagles cut him loose Friday.
Green Bay also signed rookie receiver Pat Palmer to the practice squad. Palmer, who caught a school-record 99 passes for 2,223 yards at Northwestern State, was Washington’s sixth-round pick in the 1998 draft. He was waived by the Redskins on August 25th.
Freeman was enjoying a career season before breaking his jaw against the Eagles on November 29th. He is second in the NFC with 1,070 receiving yards and needs 174 to surpass his career high, set last season.
Monday’s loss dropped the Packers two games behind the San Francisco 49ers in the race for the NFC’s top wild card spot. Green Bay needs a win and a Tampa Bay loss or tie to clinch a postseason berth. If the playoffs started this weekend, the Packers would play at San Francisco in the opening round.
Green Bay’s running game has gotten a boost with the return of leading rusher Dorsey Levens, who missed nine games with a broken leg. But Levens has carried just 14 times for 49 yards in two games since returning to the backfieldRelated Stories
